Characteristics: a large deciduous tree with downy oval leaves when young, later becoming rough and lobed or deeply cut.
Habitat: clay, volcanic and sandstone soils with deep stagnant water deposits.
Uses and properties: the extremely hard wood is difficult to work but
is used for railway sleepers (ties) and for heating.
